What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction is a surgical procedure that uses a precise beam of light to gently reshape the cornea—the eye’s outer surface—to improve vision. The laser removes microscopic layers of tissue to flatten the cornea (to correct nearsightedness), steepen it (to correct farsightedness), or smooth out irregularities (to correct astigmatism). The goal of laser eye surgery is to reshape the cornea to focus light more accurately onto the retina, resulting in clearer, sharper vision. The two primary types of laser vision correction are LASIK and ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens).

Does LASIK in Los Angeles Hurt?

You won’t feel any pain during LASIK or ICL surgery because your surgeon will use anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes. After the procedure, your doctor may prescribe pain medication if needed. Most LASIK patients experience only mild discomfort for a day or two post-surgery. ICL surgery may involve more discomfort because it exposes deeper layers of the cornea. For optimal and comfortable vision after ICL, the protective surface cells must regenerate over the treated area, which can take up to two weeks or longer.

How Long Does LASIK Take?

The laser treatment itself usually takes less than a minute, while the entire procedure typically lasts about 15 minutes per eye.

What to Expect on the Day of Treatment

LASIK is an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll spend about an hour at the surgeon’s office and leave shortly after. You will need someone to drive you home, as your vision may be blurry immediately after surgery.

During the procedure, you’ll rest in a reclining chair while the surgeon administers anesthetic eye drops, positions your head under the laser, and uses an eyelid speculum to keep your eye open. In LASIK, the surgeon creates a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, folds it back, uses the laser to reshape the cornea, and then repositions the flap.
